ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates how to use Dynamic Teaching with social studies standards. The National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) is an organization dedicated to improving the education of social studies for the nation’s students. According to the NCSS, “Young people who are knowledgeable, skillful, and committed to democracy are necessary to sustaining and improving the democratic way of life, and participating as members of a global community”. The standards that the NCSS has developed are called learning expectations and are organized into three sections of grade bands: early grades, middle grades, and high school. The social studies curriculum holds many opportunities for developing an inquiry-based environment in which students are participating in authentic learning, engaging with real-world mentors and organizations, and solving relevant ill-defined problems. Part of the learning expectations for the themes in each grade band is a section called “questions for exploration”.
