ABSTRACT

Teachers are motivated toward the end goal of student learning. Assessment is key to this goal, as it allows teachers to capture student thinking. For Dynamic Teaching to be complete, teachers must link the cyclical assessment process to implementation. In Teacher-Made Assessments, Gareis and Grant defined grading as “the translation of student performance on an assessment into a system of relative numbers or symbols to communicate the teacher’s judgment about the nature and degree of student learning”. Good feedback can transform the learning process for students. To be effective, feedback should lead to thinking—not just any kind of thinking, but thinking that moves learners forward. Feedback can include oral or written comments about observed work. Giving feedback to gifted students can be a tricky business. Many gifted students are perfectionists and feel like the grade they receive on their performance is a confirmation of their intelligence. Timing is everything. Another variable to consider is the amount of feedback provided.
