ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights assistive technologies that can be used to enhance verbal expression. Verbal expression deficits can be the result of motor, structural, and pragmatic impairments from injuries or disorders/differences, such as: a developmental delay, an articulation disorder, and so on. In addition to obtaining a proper diagnosis and determining appropriate goals, it is important to use conventional strategies for helping people who struggle to make themselves understood. There are many online resources that offer a wealth of information for families as well as professionals so that they become more aware of expected speech and language milestones and can benefit from descriptions of activities to promote verbal expression. A wide variety of resources are available to help improve expressive communication skills, such as articulation, word retrieval, sentence formulation, fluency, and dialogue. When selecting most appropriate technology to either improve or compensate for verbal expression skills, it is necessary to figure out which types of features will most help the individual.
