ABSTRACT

The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn. Students need to be prepared for the future. This chapter looks more in depth at collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, adaptability, global awareness, information literacy, leadership, citizenship/social responsibility, effective oral and written communication, technology literacy, and initiative. Collaboration needs to be taught to students. Providing students with choice allows for much creativity and innovation. Critical thinking is being able to think at a higher level. Adaptability is one's ability to react to change. Leadership is one of those skills that is not explicitly taught in the classroom but that everyone agrees is a valuable skill to possess. Citizenship, like leadership, is one of those intangible qualities that cannot be assessed on a state test, and yet, it is highly valued.
