ABSTRACT

Case-based learning got its start in medical and law schools. The idea was to study actual cases in order to learn from them. By analyzing real-world cases, learning turned from theory to practice. According to Ertmer and Russell, case-based learning can be defined as: a teaching method which requires students to actively participate in real or hypothetical problem situations, reflecting the kinds of experiences naturally encountered in the discipline under study. Case-based learning is authentic because it bridges the gap between theory and practice. Case-based learning is one of the more authentic teaching techniques because it uses scenarios from the real world. Students are not learning about some hypothetical situation or learning a concept they have difficulty seeing the larger picture of.
