ABSTRACT

Parents can play an active role in transforming obstacles to opportunities for girls in STEM through their participation as citizens in influencing public policy. Private companies are concerned with their image among consumers and the general public. Advocacy campaigns that encourage fairness and general awareness of issues influence private companies to reflect on and change their practices. Local governments, particularly in urban areas, are a major funder of STEM activities for girls. After school and during summers and weekends, girls can explore STEM on their own terms, free of the mandates of state curricula. The federal government has the broadest oversight and the most authority in many matters, and states cannot overrule or ignore federal laws. Civic and business associations can encourage greater participation of girls and women in STEM by offering prizes and awards.
