ABSTRACT

Teacher attitudes and behaviors can make a significant difference in our daughter’s interest and confidence in STEM. This chapter focuses on how we can use our observations, knowledge, and experience to advocate for classroom and schoolwide actions to support girls’ engagement in STEM from kindergarten through the end of high school. Teachers set the norms for student discussions and should be conscious of the amount of time that boys and girls are speaking and that they follow up equally with boys and girls to deepen the thinking and responses of all students. Classrooms that are rich in STEM benefit all students. Parents are in a strong position to advocate for extracurricular activities that will enhance their daughters’ range of STEM experiences. Teachers can recommend students for internships, special programs, and scholarships.
