ABSTRACT

Many colleges have international study and domestic study (in another city) programs, in which students spend a semester on another campus, with some having a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) focus. Women’s leadership and gender equity awareness organizations are active on some campuses and can provide another outlet for developing leadership skills, meeting peers, and promoting women in STEM on and off campus. Volunteer opportunities, such as campus-wide service days, and ongoing commitments, such as tutoring in local afterschool programs, sometimes have a STEM focus, such as food insecurity or alternate energy sources. Participating in career days, even as first- or second-year students, can assist them in making connections within the STEM field that can lead to off-campus enrichment opportunities. Internships and school-sponsored project-based experiences can provide amazing experiences in the real world of STEM, ranging from designing data systems for banks to maximizing access to clean water.
