ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the types of programs that have been found to be effective in promoting girls’ competence and confidence in STEM. In recent years, practitioners and researchers have worked together to define and articulate the most effective strategies for promoting girls’ interest and success in STEM. Building a sense of community and other positive effects are more likely to happen when programs last for an extended period of time. To foster engagement in STEM, programs should maintain the “fun factor” in activities. STEM draws on creativity, and engaging in and appreciating the arts can enhance STEM skills and enjoyment. For instance, music uses intervals and sequencing that are also used in math, and engineers use creativity to solve physical problems. Quality STEM programs support leadership development and prepare girls to recognize barriers related to gender, ethnic group, and class and to develop strategies to confront and overcome bias.
