ABSTRACT
This unit centers on the theme of overcoming obstacles and the struggles of life to become a successful human being. Within the unit, students will read, analyze, evaluate, and interpret speeches, memoirs, poetry, and other fiction and nonfiction texts that examine how people can overcome personal or cultural struggles to improve themselves, others, and society. Students will consider various scenarios in which people prove, against the odds, that “Life is what you make it.” Students will demonstrate their growing understanding of this theme through various projects, research, informational writing, analytical writing, narrative writing, and presentations.
