ABSTRACT

High-functioning autism is not quite the Holland of "regular" autism. There are some real strengths, and there are traces of autism, but how much? There's a reluctance of professionals to diagnose anything. There are several different metaphors about autism that people use. Karyn Seroussi called autism "The Jabberwock" and talked about defeating the disease that causes autistic behaviors. She also talked about saving children from the "Pied Piper" of autism. It's interesting the different metaphors one finds—to some autism is a scary, demon thing; to others, it's a process and a journey. There are lots of books about autism out there: books written by people with doctorates and books written by mothers of children with autism, as well as numerous other books on the topic. Regardless of the shifting numbers, autism is being diagnosed at skyrocketing rates that appear to have only a little to do with our society's acceptance of labels and willingness to provide therapy for problems.
