ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the importance of engaging in collaborative practice with those outside of the school system to expand opportunities for students to develop their gifts and talents. Collaboration with community partnerships can support gifted learners’ academic needs, provide opportunities to cultivate their talents, and connect students with experts in the field. Consistent and ongoing communication with parents should start at the beginning of the school year. If emotions impact collaboration to develop an individualized learning plan, focus on reaching a consensus, or opinion held by all or most. In doing so, stronger collaborative efforts will ensue. Community partnerships might consist of corporations, libraries, park districts, and community colleges/universities, to name a few. One approach for identifying these future collaborative partners is to use community resources to help locate community contacts. Community-based mentorships offer an opportunity for sustained, ongoing collaboration. Local, state, and national agencies offer additional collaborative opportunities to advocate for resources, support, and funding for gifted education.
