ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to explain the Diagnostic Testing➛Prescriptive Instruction (DT➛PI) model as developed by Julian Stanley for use with mathematically precocious students. It aims to illustrate in a step-by-step manner the DT➛PI model and includes examples of students who have used it. The DT➛PI process begins by administering an above-level aptitude test to a talented student. The DT➛PI model, designed with precocious junior high school students in mind, has been adapted for use with younger students. Teachers should use their professional judgment with a student who falls slightly the recommended 50th percentile. In some cases, the DT➛PI model is implemented privately by parents who hire mentors to work with their children outside of school, with or without receiving school credit for the work completed by the student. The coordinator frequently administers posttests and keeps school personnel informed of the students' progress.
