ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on specific programs that can be used to meet the academic needs of mathematically talented students. The options range from entering kindergarten early or skipping a grade, to participating in an individually paced program. Extraordinarily talented students need radical acceleration and individually paced programs. The Center for Talented Youth at Johns Hopkins University provides rigorous summer programs for gifted students. Some school districts have made a conscious effort to identify their mathematically talented students and provide a carefully planned program for them. When students participate in a special program that pulls them out of the regular mathematics class, the math mentors need to be very sensitive to the needs and feelings of the regular classroom teachers. Students might need to participate in afterschool or summer programs to be challenged adequately. A wide range of programming options is available to mathematically talented students, from enrichment within the regular classroom, to fast-paced, individualized instruction.
