ABSTRACT

Science is a content-driven discipline that is systematic and seeks to build and organize knowledge in such a way that it can be tested and replicated. Science attempts to explain the unexplainable phenomena of our world; it is the unending search for truth. The scientific method is one of discipline, laws, and observable behaviors. Science demands that measurements be accurate and that observations be clearly made without bias. With the implementation of the CCSS for ELA teachers must incorporate literacy skills within the detail-oriented elements of their discipline. The extension lessons provide students with opportunities to practice and embed literacy and critical thinking skills into science content at both instructional and challenge levels. By selecting the appropriate DOK level, the teacher and students can ensure the appropriate challenge level is being addressed, while also closely adhering to the science standards.
