ABSTRACT

The extension lessons in this chapter provide special areas and elective teachers opportunities to further explore the elements within their field of study. These extension lessons allow students to develop their critical and creative thinking processes and deepen their understanding of the selected field of study. The extensions have been divided into the following categories: art, band and orchestra, dance and physical education, general music, and world languages. The ability to analyze a text, utilize the details, and draw conclusions about the authors’ intention is pertinent in theatre, language arts, music, and art. Being able to ascertain this intention as well as create the intended message through one’s craft is vital. In theatre, this is accomplished through character and script development. This lesson focuses on the art of characterization. The students begin with a visualization exercise, then work on developing character types using improvisation.
