ABSTRACT

This chapter details some case studies which related to differentiated instruction for gifted learners including special populations of gifted learners in the cluster classroom in early childhood, elementary, middle, and high school settings. Acceleration is a strategy for advancing student learning in the classroom where students receive instruction at a faster rate or earlier than age-mates. Acceleration may occur within the regular classroom, by subject, or by grade level. In a case study, Miss Sharma prepares for the new school year and makes a surprising discovery. Academic Learning, Exploration, Resource, and technology School (ALERTS) offers gifted students an extension of their grades 6 through 8 experience in a gifted academy, a Montessori school, or Pre-Advanced Placement classes across the district. ALERTS case explores one strategy to meet learning needs in core content areas so that gifted ninth-grade students are able explore core content through their interests and learning strengths.
