ABSTRACT

The purpose of a rubric is to demonstrate for the students the criteria and expectations of the teacher, as well as to allow the teacher to quickly evaluate a product on these same criteria. When designing a rubric for primary students, it is important to look at what would be meaningful to the students. It should also be noted that many kindergarten and first-grade programs do not give formal grades for student work. The great equalizer for hundreds of different products is a generic rubric that can cover all the important qualities of an excellent product. The most common reason teachers feel uncomfortable with menus is their need for fair and equal grading. Teachers often feel it is easier to grade only one type of product made by all of the students, rather than grading a large number of different products, none of which looks like any other.
