ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the preassessment directions for the teacher to determine prior knowledge of unit content, and to build understanding of the unit macroconcept, science content, and science processes. Each assessment should be administered on a different day. Explain to students that the class is beginning a new unit of study. Tell them that they will be completing a preassessment to determine what they already know about the topic. Assure them that the assessment is not for a grade and encourage them to do their best. Collect all of the preassessments. Briefly review each assessment and discuss some of the responses in general, indicating that this unit will provide them with more knowledge and skills than they now have.
