ABSTRACT

During an election year, you may not wish to have students participate in the simulation as outlined on pages 21–24, but you may want them to understand the Electoral College process and be able to relate this to the real election as they follow it. In this case, you will not reenact the convention part of the campaign and will not have any student candidates. You will, however, assign the electoral votes as in one of the scenarios described in Apportioning Electoral Votes (pp. 13–20). Ballots should list the names of the actual candidates running for President and Vice President. Have students vote for the actual candidates. Translate their votes to electoral votes and tally the electoral votes to determine the winner. After the election, compare your results to the actual national election tallies. You may also wish to compare your popular vote to that of your community. This method works particularly well with a large group of several classes or an entire school population.
