ABSTRACT

Students review key information about reconstruction through a true/false activity. They connect generalizations about conflict to the unfinished business of the reconstruction period and complete a pre-assessment to gauge their present knowledge about the post-reconstruction time period. The periods of reconstruction and what many people call post-reconstruction can be especially confusing. The civil rights act of 1866 guaranteed all people born in the United States full citizenship and all of the rights that every citizen has. In addition, the act guaranteed the “full and equal benefit of all laws and proceedings for the security of person and property, as is enjoyed by white citizens”. The term carpetbagger comes from the traveling bags they often used. Today the term is used to describe someone who comes from the outside and tries to manipulate a situation for his or her own good.
