ABSTRACT
Students participate in a Socratic Seminar, discussing excerpts from the works of two significant African American leaders. W.E.B. Du Bois’s essay “The Talented Tenth” and Booker T. Washington’s “Atlanta Compromise Speech” are analyzed to discern each man’s beliefs about the best strategy for African Americans to achieve equality at the turn of the century. This session requires two class periods.
