ABSTRACT
Safe and productive learning environments are those that support emotional and intellectual growth. Educators must create learning environments for gifted individuals that foster cultural understanding, safety and emotional well-being, positive social interactions, and active engagement. In addition, educators of the gifted must foster environments in which diversity is not just understood but valued. The cases reflect how educators shape the environment to encourage independence, motivation, and self-advocacy of gifted and talented students. The United States is an increasingly diverse nation. Preparing the education professional to recognize and respond to the needs of students from diverse, at-risk populations is critical to student achievement, postsecondary success, and ultimately, the future of the United States. Educators who provide a culturally responsive learning environment encourage students to exhibit gifted characteristics and behaviors. Parents of gifted children are often the first to notice behaviors that differ from other children. They can provide valuable information to educators about their children.
