ABSTRACT

Writing is hard work. Writing well is even harder. Ethnography requires good writing skills at every state of the enterprise. Researchers survey the literature about their topic before they begin their research. The literature review may help to provide more information about the subculture under study. This exercise will help the students gauge whether enough information exists to proceed with their topic. A letter will be sent out to apprise parents of the study. Students will need to do some of the ethnography work outside of class, including observations. Parents will need to be a support system for the students in completing this project. Writing the proposal will help students clarify their thinking. "In sitting down to put thoughts on paper, an individual must organize those thoughts and sort out the specific ideas and relationships" and explain them to others. One of the main goals of this unit is to have students learn to use research tools in context.
