ABSTRACT

This chapter offers more specific information about the elements teachers will find in each unit, including information about how the CLEAR (Challenge Leading to Engagement, Achievement, and Results) Curriculum Model comes to life in the teaching of these language arts units. Each unit emphasizes "big ideas" within a major focus area in language arts instruction: poetry, storytelling, fiction, nonfiction, rhetoric, and research. Each unit begins with an overview of the big ideas, learning objectives, and a unit outline that gives an overview of each particular lesson, the related big idea(s), and the targeted skills. There are four icons used to indicate how students should be grouped for instructional activities: whole-class instruction, small-group work, independent work, and anchor activity. Students will be asked to produce authentic products throughout each of the units, and these final assessments will provide an opportunity for teachers and students to assess learning.
