ABSTRACT

Duckworth and her colleagues could not find an instrument to appropriately measure grit, so they developed the Grit Scale. Interestingly, the items that measure passion don’t really ask about the emotions the people think of related to passion: excitement, fascination, craving. It’s interesting to view the perseverance items as a separate group. The Grit Scale is useful in their pursuit to build grit in their students. The items are written simply and are a tangible way for teachers to discuss the construct with students. In 1985, Dr. Benjamin Bloom outlined three stages of developing talent in children. The first stage is all about having fun, romancing the discipline, and receiving external rewards. In the second stage, this interest becomes a part of the child’s identity. In the final stage, children find the larger meaning in their interests and work toward mastery.
