ABSTRACT
The school housed the continuation high school, as well as the virtual and independent schools for the district. Some experienced adverse childhood events within the home setting. And others survived community violence or similar difficult acts. The stories these children shared have forever changed me. Together, they have taught me about the worst and best of humanity. The following story is a combination of some of the stories shared with me in my tenure. The names have all been changed, as well as some of the identifying details. But the point of the story—the impact of trauma and the power of resiliency—remains the same. Jorge's story is one of the most poignant I've ever experienced. Their survival happened because of all of the people who were willing to see past their trauma.
