ABSTRACT

The percentage of kids who actually end up playing professional sports is tiny. The only obstacle, according to the parent (Mr. NBA), is that the people, as the coach, don’t seem to see all of the amazing potential the player has and don’t give him or her the playing time, starting position, position on the field, or whatever it takes to win that full-ride scholarship. Many coaches meet with the parents of their players before the season begins to go over the athletic policy and the sportsmanlike conduct expected of both players and fans. Although these meetings don’t ensure exemplary behavior, they provide fair warning if it turns out that the coach or district officials have to restrain or remove a stubbornly intransigent parent from a game. Sports are an important part of school, and coaches have a huge influence on kids’ self-esteem and character.
