ABSTRACT

Some difficult parents are born that way; others are made. Parents of special needs kids often fall into the latter category. Of course, some parents of special education students, like any parents, might be difficult in any situation, but the readers need to keep in mind that it’s not a contest between the teacher and the parent when the child’s learning is at stake. Teachers need to be aware of any modifications that the child is entitled to, and they need to adjust their classroom procedures and requirements accordingly, remembering that not only are they required to do so by law, but that the modifications are in the best interests of the child. Teachers who are well aware of a child’s special needs and requirements and follow through accordingly have a greater chance of working well with the child’s parents.
