ABSTRACT

All parents have the right and responsibility to know what their children are learning. The Caped Crusader, however, believes his ideas or principles should be embraced by everyone. A frequent target for the Crusader is the school curriculum. It is important to recognize that the Crusader may honestly disagree with a book choice a teacher makes and may legitimately protest having his child read it. For some beleaguered teachers, the thought that they might be striking fear in the heart of anyone seems a stretch. Some schools put together a task force composed of teachers, library media specialists, administrators, and parents to examine policies on censorship and make recommendations to the school board. Sample policies can be obtained from organizations such as the American association of school librarians and the national council of teachers of English. Sometimes teachers are reluctant to bring problems with insistent parents to their principal because they are afraid that it will make them look incompetent.
