ABSTRACT

Teachers have a right to know if a parent has a concern, and which parent it is—not so they can take it out on the student, but so that they can judge whether or not the source is credible. It is easy for a parent to impugn a teacher to the principal, who will probably not know the students as well as the teacher and thus be less able to judge the validity of the complaint. Principals and other supervisors need to insist that complaints from parents about grades or homework go directly to the teacher first. It’s the professional way of handling a concern and shows respect for the teacher.
