Negotiating is a kind of dialogue that deserves specific mention. However, negotiating usually begins with participants in disagreement over either the substance or process. Negotiating might include deciding how to share something of value, from dividing a pie to deciding who gets the bigger bedroom, or bargaining for a better price, allowance, or test grade. Negotiating also happens in contract bargaining, conflict resolution, mediation, and arbitration. Some guidelines that can be addressed in developing negotiating ability, in planned experiences or as the need arises, include: Teachers can also use role-play and read stories about how conflicts are resolved. Elementary school teacher John Hunter developed an elaborate geopolitical game in which students independently develop negotiating skills. Sometimes dialogue starts with fundamental disagreement. Students encounter these disagreements at home, in the schoolyard, and in the classroom, and they understand that lose-lose outcomes hurt everyone.
