ABSTRACT

The five W plus H questions represent the reporter's or storyteller's basic questions. Who, where, and when are essentially factual words. Why and how involve more critical thinking. What can be either, depending on its use. The five question stems starting with W, in particular, represent a specific case of eliciting thinking and responses to a printed text, notably news-oriented texts. The questions are important enough to stand alone, especially as a starting point for younger students to gather data that describe a phenomenon. These words act as devices to help unpack the facts any text reveals.
