ABSTRACT

VanTassel-Baska and Johnsen defined educational change as a process that involves motivating and collaborating with people to conduct practice in ways that align with research-based evidence. This definition promotes a more scientific approach to teaching and learning to produce positive outcomes for learners. The type of change will be influenced by the level of complexity of the problem, level of uncertainty, degree of conflict or rivalry generated with the culture, variability within and across the system, the interconnection between various elements, and the degree of economic or political adversity impacting the organization. Leadership is also a significant contributor to changing school systems. To stimulate the change, leadership needs to occur at multiple levels: the center or the organizers of the change, the middle layers, leaders, and the teachers. Quality professional learning is available to policymakers, leaders, and other change agents in the change process; however, it must be carefully planned, consistently implemented, and monitored for effectiveness.
