ABSTRACT

A few of the lessons include optional secondary sources that can easily be integrated into the lessons. The concept of thinking like a historian frames the way the lessons are created; each lesson challenges students to examine a historical question, analyze the evidence, create a hypothesis, and use the specific evidence to support the hypothesis. The lessons each follow a similar structure focused on students doing inquiry, or thinking and reading like a historian. Each part of the lesson includes detailed instructions for planning and implementation, as well as commonly used literacy strategies. Background information and tips for implementing these literacy strategies are available from many online sources. The "way of knowing" changed during the Scientific Revolution in the Western world. During that time, European scientists began to use empiricism, or the use of evidence usually gathered through research and experiment to reach a conclusion.
