ABSTRACT

Students in research study identified four cross-categorical practices that helped them in their scholastic development: acceleration, personal relationships with teachers and other personnel, mentorships and internships, and career exploration. Of these four, acceleration in their strength areas was the most highly rated intervention by the students. Some studies have focused on the positive effects of specific forms of acceleration. Brody found that among accelerated students, the best predictor of college achievement was early and continued Advanced Placement (AP) course-taking, suggesting that the challenging work of AP, applied on an ongoing basis, has a close correlation to later achievement. McClarty found overall positive effects for grade acceleration on college performance. Growth is assessed not only for performance on state tests, but also for national level comparisons with top learners in a given area.
