ABSTRACT

Interventions for gifted students with special needs must also consider areas beyond what the student case studies have suggested. Most of the case studies mentioned the importance of clinical personnel in student development, so it is important to consider what clinical applications might be used in the classroom to motivate students to perform at high levels. Several approaches may be employed to accomplish these ends: bibliotherapy, videotherapy, discussion groups, and lessons designed on the principles of emotional intelligence. The use of books in addressing the affective concerns of gifted learners has long been lauded as an intervention by itself, but it is magnified in effectiveness when the books reflect the specific issues of special needs populations. Bibliotherapy can be useful in helping students explore issues of identity development, emotional intelligence, and multiculturalism, among other issues.
