ABSTRACT

Academic achievers are academically oriented students who exhibit negative perfectionism in their academic pursuits. They hold unrealistically high expectations for their own academic performance and expect perfection, and nothing less, from themselves. In fact, due to the extremely high standards that they impose on themselves, Academic achievers often put forth more effort than required to master the material and achieve at top level. Rather than a lack of effort being a problem, they sometimes have a problem with being too fixated on perfecting something rather than moving on to next subject, problem, or challenge. In addition to learning from their mistakes, Academic Achievers need to learn to recognize their improvement and progress rather than basing their evaluation on a final grade or assessment. Families of academic achievers often find themselves in awkward situations. On one hand, they are pleased with their child's commitment to academic success, but on the other hand, they are troubled by their child's sometimes unhealthy obsession.
