This chapter discusses the activities—which can be used as common formative assessments and completed either independently or collaboratively, on a student’s first or second reading—gauge how well the students comprehend the text from a literal and inferential level. The sample student Facebook page created for Guy Montag clearly shows the student’s comprehension of who the character is, as well as how he relates to other characters. As students converse with each other via their characters’ Facebook pages, they are required to integrate textual evidence on the Facebook feed to support their posts. The pairing of texts is the beginning of asking to students to synthesize evidence. The following activity allows students to demonstrate their engagement with a novel in multiple ways: First they write a traditional essay, and then communicate their argument to the class in a presentation that combines the oral and the visual.
