ABSTRACT

This chapter dives into the idea of connections and shares some essentials that will help the teachers cultivate connections with ourself, our students, and our colleagues. Social capital can be a great equalizer in underrepresented populations, especially when students and families are taught effective networking techniques. Students can benefit greatly from supportive institutional structures and family-school networks that invest in their lives and learning. The opposite of humility is pride, which can manifest in many ways, most of them detrimental to ability to serve others well. One of the ways that pride shows up in lives is in perfectionism. Teachers feel distress when their dream of making a difference in the world is confronted by the reality of a bureaucratic school system. The activity can also be useful for getting to know and appreciate our fellow teachers. Complete the same activity, but place teachers’ names in the left column.
