ABSTRACT

Teachers are often the most challenging audiences—and for good reason. They have participated in countless professional learning sessions and have seen many trends in education come and go. Increase of motivation, willingness to accept new challenges, and healthier reaction to failure are only a few of the benefits children will experience when they understand how their brains work. Carol Dweck and fellow Stanford researcher Kali Trzesniewski teamed up with Lisa Blackwell of Columbia University in 2007 to examine whether students’ mindsets influenced their academic achievement at a key transitional period in their adolescence. Research has shown that young children hear very few instances of the word brain in everyday conversation. Recent studies estimate that the average human has 86,060,000,000 neurons. Here are a few resources that the people and their children may enjoy as they learn more about the brain.
