ABSTRACT

Children develop critical skills and lifelong enjoyment through their participation in sports and the arts. Whether as a casual observer, an ardent cheerleader, or a seasoned coach, the role of the parent in developing a growth mindset through sports and the arts is significant. The recipe for helping a child to be successful in the arts, sports, or academics does not rely on any innate talent on the part of the parent. Although the creators of Baby Einstein videos and toys aim to spark a child's curiosity about the arts, it is evident from the popularity of the products that many parents believe that the toys and programs can cultivate talent. In a growth mindset, cheering from the sidelines of a sporting event or performance includes acknowledging the child's efforts, encouraging risk taking and praising growth. Few moments are more stressful for families than sports tryouts, particularly at the high school or club sports levels.
