ABSTRACT

The field of gifted education focuses on conceptions related to obsession. In considering whether there can be a positive obsession, let author look at its characteristics. Characteristics such as passion, focus, preoccupation, energy, and time loss are important to consider. Perhaps obsession lies next on the continuum of human experience, overlapping with flow but maintaining some of its own characteristics. His parents obliged, and his interest clearly became an obsession. Moreover, he started spending most of his time studying the drums. He performed during school band shows and was given early solos to great approval of the adults and his peers. This lesson he learned as he received important guidance from others during his early obsession. He was in gifted programs throughout school, seemingly never flagging due to his obsession with drums. His computer skills, which were enhanced during the drum obsession period when he learned basic recording techniques, positioned him within the band as the expert recording engineer.
