ABSTRACT

Students with gifts and talents in Mary Evans’s school tend to thrive because, as the instructional leader in the school, she understands the cognitive, social, and emotional needs of children and realizes the importance of her staff understanding this as well. Working with small groups at GT Academy or during GT and Talented Response to Intervention allows us to discuss social-emotional issues, stresses in school, academic issues, and personal triumphs on a regular basis. Students are challenged academically and creatively as each student’s intellectual engagement is the goal of each lesson or activity. Some schools may adopt curricula and curriculum models that have been specifically designed for gifted students. So many typical assignments at school are just mind numbing for gifted students. Schools should incorporate a wide variety of services to address the cognitive, social, and emotional needs of gifted learners.
