ABSTRACT

In some settings, people expect a lot from one another, spur one another on, and stimulate one another’s efforts. In other settings, people expect little from one another, hold each other back, and even undermine the efforts of some. That’s why people who are serious about success seek others with similar aspirations. They work or train with people who are at least as talented as they are, and even better. Working with others with more talent improves our own performance. High achievement requires a willingness to work at the edge of one’s competence. An appropriate level of challenge is essential for high achievement. Children who have a high need to stay in their comfort zone(s) will take easy risks initially, but as they gain experience taking on a challenge and watch others who take on even greater challenges, they will be more willing to step out toward their own edge of competence.
