ABSTRACT

SUCCESS comes with a price. Tony knows this all too well. He is a gifted, Latino eighth grader with excellent test scores. His teachers and parents know he’s capable of much better than the C’s he earns in class. Although he actively participates in class discussions and seems genuinely interested in some of his subjects, he consistently fails to turn in homework or put forth much effort on tests. When asked about it, he just shrugs and says he’d rather be with his friends. His teachers worry that if he decides not to take the accelerated classes, he’ll just coast and settle for mediocre grades.
