ABSTRACT

This chapter includes examples of inquiry-based tasks for grades 6-10. A task is a condensed form of a project-based learning unit, similar to a robust performance assessment or investigation. Tasks are great for covering standards over just a few class periods. Each sample task includes the following components: title, subject/grade level, common core state standards and mathematical practices, time frame, task question, situation/problem, materials/resources, possible misconceptions/expected answers, and example lesson: mini-lesson, work time, debrief. The tasks cover the following topics/grade levels: proportional relationships, three-dimensional analysis, linear relationships, descriptive statistics, trigonometry basics, and weighted average. Statistics is a branch of mathematics that has grown due to the increase in technology and more discoveries. It is important for people to understand how to read all types of data representations. In this task, students will create an infographic about the demographics of their area.
