ABSTRACT

Creating an inquiry-based task or a project-based learning unit is challenging for math teachers. As a teacher is planning a PBL unit and looking at his or her calendar, it is important to intersperse moments in which students are engaged in sustained inquiry. The following is an example of how a colleague, who is a middle school history teacher, used this thinking in her project planning. The students had to mention key historical events that happened between 1800 and 1875 and how the events impacted their character(s). A quick idea might be to give the students various-sized cans with instructions to create a box to enclose the cans. The chapter shows how students some graphical representations of some statistics, and they had to decide whether they strongly agreed, agreed, disagreed, or strongly disagreed.
