ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights some of the strategies that enhance mathematical instruction and can be used on a daily basis. Some of the strategies examined include: seminars, the Modified Moore Method, journaling, KWL, and the 5E model. The chapter deals with how to plan a lesson within a project-based learning unit with these strategies in mind. A fishbowl is a discussion strategy that has many purposes and modifications. Strategies or activities must align with the deadline; therefore, it is important to think about everything students need to meet the key deadlines. The students engage in sense-making during this time. The teacher walks around checking in on student progress and collecting students who will participate in the debrief. Students then work independently or in groups to answer the problem. Once students have gained some understanding, they move into the explain section, in which they are given an opportunity to communicate what they have learned so far.
