ABSTRACT

Children need to understand that life isn’t always fun, that everyone gets bored occasionally—or dislikes the task at hand—and that the children's all have to do things that they would rather not. Help them to learn to mentally challenge themselves when caught in these situations. Talk with the teachers and/or administrators at the school about ways that the parents and child might be more appropriately challenged. Because the parents cannot always control the school environment, also help our child to learn to challenge himself at school. Many parents fight to get their kids into more challenging academic classes because they know that challenge is healthy, yet these same caregivers often protect their youngsters from challenge in other aspects of their lives, such as dealing with uncomfortable situations, learning to work with people who have different ideas, earning money to purchase something they want, doing without a lot of material possessions, or learning to fill their own free time.
